Rules for Implementation of Conferring Bachelor’s Degree to Undergraduate Students of Tongji University
On the basis of the Regulations on academic degrees of the People’s Republic of China, Interim measures for implementation of regulations on academic degrees from the People’s Republic of China, the Rules for Implementation of Conferring Bachelor’s Degree to Undergraduate Students at Tongji University were revised in accordance with the actual situation of the University.
I. Graduates who meet the following conditions shall be conferred a Bachelor’s degree:
1. Adhering to the Four Cardinal Principles, being prepared to serve the cause of socialist construction, abiding by the national constitution and the University disciplines, and behaving in a good manner;
2. Completing the requirements of the undergraduate program plans and passing the graduation review;
3. Transcripts of the completed courses of study and graduation thesis (graduation design or other graduation practice) demonstrating clearly a good grasp of the basic theories, specialized knowledge, and basic skills in the discipline concerned; and
4. Having acquired the initial ability to undertake scientific research or to engage in a special technical work.
II. A Bachelor’s degree shall not be conferred if any of the following circumstances occurs:
1. Having delivered remarks and actions that clearly oppose the Four Cardinal Principles, and persisting in after persuasion and education;
2. Having a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) equal to or less than 2.5;
3. Having received "demerit mark" or other severer disciplinary sanctions during the academic years;
4. Having completed or partially completed a program.
III. For students in cases listed in Articles 2.2 and 2.4, as well as without any disciplinary violation records, they will be allowed to re-sit or re-take courses within the prescribed time period (e.g., within six years for four-year undergraduate program, seven years for five-year program, counted on the day when first enrolled in the University). After successfully passing the examinations and meeting all other graduation requirements, a Bachelor’s degree shall be conferred.
IV. For students in cases listed in Article 2.3, they will be allowed to sit one time for the degree course examination within the prescribed time period (e.g., within six years for four-year undergraduate program, seven years for five-year program, counted on the day when first enrolled in the University) provided they have made outstanding accomplishments in their workplaces (with proofs provided by the workplaces). If they pass the examinations and meet all other requirements for graduation, a Bachelor’s degree shall be conferred. The degree course examination is scheduled for May of each year.
V. For graduates in the higher vocational schools and independent colleges at the school level of the University, applying for a Bachelor’s degree requires them to successfully complete four degree-required course examinations, including two basic courses, one basic specialized course, and one specialized course. Specific examination courses are set up according to the program plan of each specialty. The Academic Affairs Office will organize the examinations and reviews according to the requirements of full-time undergraduate schooling. Only those students eligible shall be conferred a bachelor 's degree.
VI. The assessment procedure for a Bachelor’s degree:
1. Each college/school (or department) shall conduct the review of undergraduate students one-by-one according to Implementation Rules for Conferring a Bachelor’s Degree to Undergraduates at Tongji University, and then submit the proposed list of the Bachelor’s degree holders to the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee of the college/school (or department) for review. After the reviewed list is reviewed and approved by the Office of Academic Degree Evaluation Committee of Tongji University, the achelor's degrees shall be conferred.
2. The higher vocational schools and independent colleges at the school level shall conduct the review of undergraduate students one-by-one according to Implementation Rules for Conferring a Bachelor’s Degree to Undergraduates at Tongji University, and then submit the proposed list of the Bachelor’s degree holders to the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee of the college/school (or department) for review. After the reviewed list is reviewed and approved by the Office of Academic Degree Evaluation Committee of Tongji University, the Bachelor’s degrees shall be conferred.
VII. Controversial issues shall be submitted to the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee of Tongji University for discussion and a decision. If the Bachelor’s degree holder is found ineligible, the Committee will revoke the decision of conferring the Bachelor’s degree and withdraw the issued Bachelor’s degree certificate.
VIII. The Rules shall be interpreted by Academic Degree Evaluation Committee of Tongji University and implemented by the Academic Affairs Office.
IX. The Rules apply to undergraduates enrolled in and after 2006, and shall go into effect the date they are approved by Academic Degree Evaluation Committee of Tongji University.
