Time:2018-11-20

These regulations are formulated to promote the international exchange and cooperation of undergraduate education at Tongji University, strengthen the administration of exchange learning of undergraduate students in universities in other countries, and ensure the continuity and effectiveness of student learning.

Article 1.  These regulations apply to the administration of Chinese and foreign double degrees, course study, and the short-term exchange programs attended by full-time undergraduate students of Tongji University at foreign universities.

Article 2.  Students who attend courses at foreign universities are required, under the guidance of the deans in charge of academic affairs or professional supervisors of their colleges, to make course plans for their exchange learning before going abroad. The "Planner for International Exchange Program of Tongji Undergraduate Students" is also required to fill in so as to clarify the courses to be taken at the foreign universities and the courses to be replaced at Tongji University. These must be reported to colleges/schools (departments) and the Academic Affairs Office for the record.

Article 3.  The courses taken by students at foreign universities should generally be close to or equivalent to those in the professional training programs of Tongji University (similarity of the main courses of the specialties is generally not less than 70%). Only those that basically meet the requirements for the training of students at Tongji University can be identified as the corresponding category of courses in the professional training program of Tongji University.

Article 4.  Courses taken by students at foreign universities should generally be converted into the credits of Tongji University according to the correspondence between the class hours and credits of the foreign universities and Tongji University (each theoretical course within 17 class hours corresponds to 1 credit). The total credits should be in line with the credits of the professional training program at Tongji University.

Article 5.  The academic research, internships, or other practice that students participate in at foreign universities can be recognized as credits for internships. Attending competitions abroad can be recognized as credits for innovation and extension activities, according to the "Administrative Measures to Recognize Credits for Innovation and Extension Activities of Tongji Undergraduate Students".

Article 6.  After completing the exchange study and obtaining the transcript(s) from the counterpart foreign universities, the students must fill in the application form for the course identification and upload the scanned copy(copies) of the official transcript(s) on the website https://1.tongji.edu.cn/ within 6 weeks after returning to the university. It will first be reviewed by the Academic Office of the students’ colleges/schools (departments) before being transferred to the Academic Office of the colleges/schools (departments) which open the course(s) for the entry, review, and identification of the transcript(s). Afterwards, it will be submitted to the Academic Affairs Office for verification and recording.

Article 7.  Credits and grades recognition materials must include: official transcripts (original and photocopy, one for each) issued by foreign universities, criteria for evaluation of grades, syllabus (or approved course descriptions), textbooks, or handouts. If the student is enrolled in a course listed in an intercollegiate or inter-university joint training agreement, only the application form and transcript(s) are needed for submission.

Article 8.  After the Academic Office of the colleges/schools (departments) that opened the course(s) receive the application materials from the students, the dean in charge of academic affairs shall organize the relevant lecturers to review the syllabi and teaching materials. Only those which meet the requirements of Article 3 can be preliminarily recognized as the credits for corresponding courses at Tongji University.

Article 9.  The transcripts of the courses completed by students at foreign universities shall be certified according to the following principles:

1. If the grade registration at the foreign universities is similarly divided into five levels (such as: A, B, C, D, F), the grades and credits will be directly recognized and recorded in the students’ score table according to the registration of Tongji University. That is, the corresponding relationship between the grades of the counterpart and Tongji University is as follows:
